[She] had asked shortly before [having the dream] how a statue of greenish bronze had been made, and she was also afraid that the foxes in the neighborhood might kill the animals she was rearing. But whatever the assimilations may be which would explain these images, the fact remains that [the girl], when frightened by the fox coming to destroy the statue, felt in her dream that the safest thing for her to do was to return to her mother’s womb. According to Piaget, the occurrence of nightmares reveals the only real difference between children’s playing and dreaming. Fears and anxieties are commonly expressed in both playing and dreaming, “but in play there is always more or less conscious control, while in dreams control is more difficult, because the situation is assimilated to more deeply-seated schemas, i.e., to a more remote past” (180).

Piaget rejects Freud’s theory that dreams are intentionally disguised by a censoring mechanism within the mind. Instead, he aligns himself with Jung’s view that the symbolic images of dreams reflect basic mental patterns and structures common to all humans. Although Piaget disagrees with Jung’s claim that certain symbolic contents are inherited (and thus he agrees with Freud that the capacity for symbolism originates anew in each individual), he does say we should accept Jung’s important notion that there is a level of primitive symbolic thought in each person’s mind.
